Stephen Ireland would have been unbelievable according to his Manchester City teammate Shaun Wright-Phillips.Ex-England national team winger Wright-Phillips told OTB Sports that Stephen Ireland would have been a phenomenal player as he had a similar footballing qualities to Frank Lampard.

Lampard became a club legend at Chelseawinning the league title three times in addition to the Champions League title. He was a key member of the Blues squad that won the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history by beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the 2012 Champions League final. He won two successive league titles under Jose Mourinho between 2004 and 2006 before adding a third league title under Italian tactician Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the 2009/10 campaign.

Cork native Stephen Ireland signed for the Citizens in 2005 and he went on to become an important player for the club. The Republic of Ireland international showed his quality during the 2008/09 season and he was named the Player of the Season at the club.

Stephen Ireland won the man-of-the-match award in his first start for Manchester City. He was head and shoulders above the other players on the pitch when he made his first start for the Citizens against Everton.

Wright-Phillips said he had a good understanding with Stephen Ireland on the pitch while they were together at Manchester City. Ireland was not at the club when Wright-Phillips had his first spell before moving to Chelsea. He returned to Manchester City for his second spell in 2008.

Ireland didn’t fulfil his potentials for the Republic of Ireland despite having a fantastic start to his international career with the senior team. The midfielder scored four goals in his first six games for the Republic of Ireland and he didn’t add more caps until he retired from football.
