Cork native Stephen Ireland signed for the Citizens in 2005 and he went on to become an important player for the club. The Republic of Ireland international showed his quality during the 2008/09 season and he was named the Player of the Season at the club.
Stephen Ireland won the man-of-the-match award in his first start for Manchester City. He was head and shoulders above the other players on the pitch when he made his first start for the Citizens against Everton.
Wright-Phillips said he had a good understanding with Stephen Ireland on the pitch while they were together at Manchester City. Ireland was not at the club when Wright-Phillips had his first spell before moving to Chelsea. He returned to Manchester City for his second spell in 2008.
Ireland didn’t fulfil his potentials for the Republic of Ireland despite having a fantastic start to his international career with the senior team. The midfielder scored four goals in his first six games for the Republic of Ireland and he didn’t add more caps until he retired from football.
